Rep. Blumenauer: Pass the Water for the World Act

GWC member PSI published a blog post from Representative Earl Blumenauer (D-OR 3) that praises the Water for the Poor Act of 2005 and highlights the importance of passing the Water for the World Act:

The Water for the Poor Act has helped increase access to drinking water to 30 million people, provided access to improved sanitation facilities to over 15 million and disinfected more than 9 billion gallons of water. There are now high-level positions within the U.S. State Department and Agency for International Development (USAID) to coordinate policy and resources. Yet we still have a long way to go in creating a comprehensive and comprehensible strategy. Today, nearly 900 million people lack access to an improved source of drinking water.

It is within our capacity to ensure that everyone has access to clean water and sanitation. I will also reintroduce the Water for the World Act this year to ensure that the progress we have made within the State Department and USAID cannot be reversed, and that our resources are spent in the regions of greatest need.
